![]() If you happen to have Amazon prime then you can get quite a few free kindle ebooks, I believe, (or pay more for kindle ‘unlimited’ ?) which would make a kindle more worthwhile. You used to be able to convert them using Calibre on a desk/laptop but I think that that may have got more difficult now though I expect there will be other programmes available to presumably strip the digital rights management and convert. Kobo does, I think, allow you to use a range of different ebook formats ( including pdf) but it will not immediately read kindle books - you certainly won’t be able to simply move kindle books on to it. If you had another ‘residence’ elsewhere by some chance ( you say ‘currently’ in Portugal) to give as an address from which you can sign up then it should work even if you aren’t physically there? That’s a shame because it’s a great system that means lots of free books and magazines. I would normally say get a Kobo because you can get browse library books and download directly into it using Overdrive ( which also powers apps like Libby/BorrowBox/Rbdigital) - but unfortunately it doesn’t look like you can do that in Portugal. I think that correlates to something around 6000 books approx. Regarding storage, if you are just mainly reading text based books (no manga/comics), 8gb is completely fine. It also can read ePubs directly without needing to convert them. The Clara also has warm light which is great for reading in the dark as it’s easier on the eyes. If Kobo overdrive integration works in Portugal (you should check on their website), it could mean you could potentially access your public library’s ebook collection on your device. With Kobo, you have Dropbox integration and Overdrive. idk if this option is available in Portugal but on the US Amazon website you can trade in your kindle device in future should you ever want an upgrade and get a 20% off coupon for your next kindle purchase, and a gift card with what they’ve valued your kindle to have been worth. The Kindle Paperwhite is also waterproof which the isn’t the case with the Clara. The main differences are that you would have access to Amazon v easily with Kindle, and can email docs to your device. Although kindles typically get discounted more frequently. It depends on what you’d like in the devices. Personally, I couldn’t get it to work on my MacBook though I’m not v tech savvy. ![]() You can look over here for Apprentice Alf and Kindle DRM removal if you do a search and familiarise yourself with Calibre (a library management system that has plugins that can allow for such a process). You would have to remove the DRM to get the books bought on one system to another device from another ecosystem.
